At the Bar: The Battleground
If you are anything like me, you want to be healthy, but also partake in the spirits once in a while, no? Yes! And what I do know as a health coach is that we may not know it, but when we are stressed out, have anxiety, or enthralled intensely in something, many people reach for alcohol. So, I am not blind to the fact that many of you will be viewing CNN or FOXNews with bated breath on Tuesday, November 8th, and make no mistake, I will be as well! Which is why I thought it important to get ahead of the issues.
Now, there are many things we can talk about when it comes to alcohol and the effects on your health, however, I am no Debbie Downer! What I will do is give you an easy alternative of how you can switch up your drink and add a healthier twist to it! So, I introduce you to my preferred drink for Election Night 2016, The Battleground.
THE BATTLEGROUND
INGREDIENTS:
3 CUPS TX WHISKEY
1/4 CUP SIMPLE SYRUP
JUICE OF FRESH LEMON
BASIL
So the healthy twist to this recipe is the simple syrup. Instead of using syrup that is loaded with processed sugar, this simple syrup uses organic raw honey. Honey is a natural sweetener that often works better than most other processed sweeteners that many of us grab for without any thought. You can not only replace sugar in your cocktail with raw honey, you can use it as a substitute in almost anything!
SIMPLE SYRUP DIRECTIONS
Take 4 parts raw honey to 1 part filtered water and place in a sauce pot over light heat. Allow to combine while stirring. You are going to let the mixture simmer. While heating you can place a few (3) basil leaves into the mixture. After the mixture comes to a simmer, remove from the heat, strain and remove basil leaves and allow to cool.
COCKTAIL DIRECTIONS
1. In four glasses, pour equal parts of TX Whiskey and equal parts honey simple syrup.
2. Add 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice to each glass
3. Garnish with basil leaves
4. Drink up!
